Région Ile-de-France

The political and administrative architecture of France is divided into four main levels of power: the state, the regions, the departements (districts) and the communes (towns and cities). A region is composed of several departements. The Île-de-France Region is made up of eight departements and 1281 communes, including Paris. It is the leading French region out of a total of 22.

With a population of 11 million and more than 5 million jobs, the Île-de-France Region is also one of the main regions of Europe. It accounts for 18.6% of the population of France (excluding overseas possessions), and 2.5% of the 25-nation Europe.

Employment and training, economic and social development, transport, housing, town and country planning, culture, solidarity… The Regional Council is involved in many areas which relate to daily life.

Held by the regional Assembly, the Regional Council is composed of 209 regional councillors, representing political groups, elected by a direct vote of the citizens for a term of 6 years. The last election took place in March 2004.

Executive power is held by its Chairman, Mr. Jean-Paul Huchon, re-elected in March 2004 by the Regional Assembly. The Chairman is supported by 15 Vice-Chairmen.
