Why and how to learn a second language

I am absolutely sure you are familiar with the feeling of being left out when going somewhere where your native language is not spoken. Even if the trip is for pleasure or business, when the language being spoken is different – you get the feeling of being an outcast. You wish you could participate in the conversation, share the jokes, or just be able to understand the restaurant’s menu better so you can order the food you really like.

The benefits of knowing a second language or any languages different from your own have many rewards. It doesn’t just give you the basic communication benefit in all its simplicity. Knowing another language can make life-changing experiences – it can make you happier, richer and even sexier.

Surveys of dating agencies show that people who are able to speak another language are the most sought after. They are deemed to be more attractive by the opposite sex because it is something that conveys sophistication and intelligence.

Knowing another language can also serve as the doorway to a better understanding and appreciation of different cultures aside from yours. It gives you new insights and viewpoints on almost anything. Whether it is sports, politics or arts, knowing a second language can help you discover things and these could be surprising and pleasant all at the same time.

More so, being able to speak another language increases your career opportunities. This in turn could translate into bigger salaries. Researches show that bilingual speakers are of great demand nowadays that companies are even willing to pay 20% more to hire them. A second language written on a resume is not only impressive but could also make or break a job application.

So now that you know the advantages of knowing a second language, the big question is how would you select the right second language? In selecting a second language consider two simple things: your interest and your goal. Why consider your interest? It motivates you to push further and eventually excel. It will be a lot like fun rather than work if your heart’s into it. Also, know and take into account your goals in learning a particular language. It is an excellent idea to learn a language that could be useful in your chosen career or field of study. Think of these things when selecting a second language and you’ll never go wrong… Good luck!
