To convert a podcast to an Mp3 with Audacity the free, open source utility for recording and editing sounds you only need to follow the steps outlined below.

The process for PC’s and Mac’s is exactly the same. Firstly use the MP3 encoder and select “import”.

Click on “settings” and select “custom”. Now set up the MP3 encoder.

You are now ready to convert the file for podcast use. Click once on the podcast to select it. Now control click on a Mac (right click on a PC) to start the context menu. From here select “Convert Selection to MP3”. Alternatively you can select “Convert Selection to MP3” from the advanced menu.

The file should now be converting. You should select the converting file so that you can identify it without having to go to “Select Info”, this is important as the converted file will have the exact same name as the source file. Once the conversion is complete, you need to add information to the id tags of the MP3 file.

Select the converted file and “get info” by pressing control-I on a PC (Command-I on a Mac). If you don’t want to use keyboard short cuts you can select “get info” from the file pull down menu. A summary of your newly created file should now be displayed ensure that the format is MPEG-2, Layer3. Now select “info” and add the RSS tags you require.

To assign a category to your file look under “Genre”, if you can’t find a section that matches your desired category select “custom” from the drop down menu and type in a name.

Now embed an image into your created file. To do this select “add” from the “artwork” menu. Browse to the selected image and click “Choose.” Click OK to finish.

Now drag the created renamed file from the iTunes library to the file on your hard drive where you keep your podcast files. Select the new file and remove all spaces replacing them with underscores. Your MP3 file is ready. You can upload it from here if you like.
