| It was Emperor Napoleon III who instigated the great Parisian reconstruction of the Second French Empire and chose the civic planner Baron Haussmann to supervise the reconstruction. In 1858 the Emperor authorized Haussmann to clear the required 12,000 square metres of land on which to build a second theatre for the world renowned Parisian Opera and Ballet companies. The project was put out to open competition in 1861, and was won by the architect Charles Garnier (1825–1898). Just click below to listen to the dictation in French, and try to type what you hear. | Today a dictation that will make you more familiar with Maupassant, one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant’s short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient, effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it. Are you ready ? So let’s jump into Maupassant’s universe. |

| Keep visiting Paris and brushing up your french with that dictation dedicated to the 7th district and more specially our choice of “Les Invalides”. This place consists of a complex of buildings containing museums and monuments, all relating to the military history of France. There is also a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building’s original purpose. It is also the burial site for some of France’s war heroes such as Napoleon. | This week, let’s work on a dictation with Victor Hugo. He was not only a French poet, but also an essayist, a statesman, a visual artist and a human rights campaigner, and perhaps the most influential exponent of the Romantic movement in France. Conservative in his youth, Hugo moved to the political left. Just click below to listen to the dictation in French, and try to type what you hear. Good luck ! |

| Today we picked up a text from French novelist Balzac ( 1799-1850 ) : “Le Père Goriot”. It is the story of Eugène de Rastignac, the character at the center of the action, a slightly idealistic and highly ambitious law student who lives in the same rundown boarding house in a seedy area of Paris as Goriot. This novel was written around 1834-1835. Just click below to listen to the dictation in French, and try to type what you hear. Good luck ! |
